Bone grafting is a surgical procedure performed to restore or rebuild bone where there has been significant bone loss.
Bone grafting is a procedure in which artificial or natural bone material is placed to stimulate new bone growth and regenerate lost bone.
Traditionally, bone grafting was done using the autograft method, where bone is taken from another part of the patient’s own body to replace the missing bone.
However, with modern advancements in dentistry, we now commonly use the allograft technique. Allografts use bone material sourced from donors or cadavers, which is carefully sterilized and stored under controlled conditions to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Bone grafting materials are prepared in dental laboratories using autograft, allograft, or xenograft methods. These materials are highly safe and sterile. They are available in various forms such as powder, granules, putty, and even gel for easy application.
Bone grafting is a straightforward procedure that usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes to complete. There is no age restriction for undergoing this treatment.
First, the area where the graft will be placed is numbed using local anesthesia. A small incision is made in the gum to expose the underlying bone. The site is then thoroughly cleaned to prepare for the graft.
Next, the bone graft material is carefully placed in the prepared area. Finally, the gum is sutured with dissolvable (vicryl) stitches to secure the graft material and promote proper healing.
