Zygomatic implants gain their stability by anchoring into the zygomatic bone (cheekbone). They are primarily used in cases where patients experience severe bone loss in the upper jaw or have large maxillary sinuses, resulting in insufficient bone for traditional implant placement.
These longer implants anchor into the dense bone of the zygomatic arch and work in conjunction with conventional implants placed in the front (anterior) region of the maxilla. The zygomatic bone is the strongest and densest bone located in the cheek area. Due to its density, it provides excellent anchorage for implants, often offering better stability compared to conventional implants placed in the jawbone.
Zygoma implants were first introduced by Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark in 1990. These implants are made of titanium and are longer than regular implants to reach and securely anchor into the zygomatic bone. Once placed, a prosthetic solution—such as a hybrid denture—is attached to restore function and appearance.
Zygoma implant placement is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes about 3 to 4 hours. Although it’s a surgical procedure, it is considered minimally invasive, and most patients begin recovery within an hour after the procedure.
During the surgery, your implantologist will make a small incision to create a flap. Using precise drilling techniques, the implant site is prepared starting near the first molar, carefully crossing the maxillary sinus without disturbing it. The implant is then anchored firmly into the dense zygomatic bone.
A specially sized zygoma implant is carefully inserted, effectively “engaging” or securing into the zygomatic bone to provide strong and stable support for your new teeth.
